dc.description.abstract Local Area Networks (LANs) are routinely interconnected with bridges and routers to achieve one or more of the following benefits: * GEOGRAPHICAL EXTENSION OF LAN COVERAGE, * BETTER FAULT ISOLATION AND CONTAINMENT, * SECURITY AND ACCESS CONTROL, * HETEROGENOUS LAN INTERCONNECTION, * THROUGHPUT EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT To meet the requirements for the aforesaid functions, the various potential problems challenging the smooth functioning of a bridge are: * MESSAGE LEARNING AND FORWARDING PERFORMANCE OF A BRIDGE, * ADAPTABILITY OF A BRIDGE AGAINST UNWANTED/UNAUTHORIZED CONSTRAINTS, * BRIDGE TRANSPARENCY In this dissertation an attempt has been made to paveout possible solutions against these potential problems through systematic study and analysis of bridge functions. Algorithms have been developed for learning and forwarding a message frame by a bridge, adaptability of a bridge against Hardware/component failure and congestion, and heterogenous LAN Characteristics. , Finally, an analysis have been made to improve and extend bridge performance to MULTI-LAN environment and MOBILE HOST. en_US
