Abstract:
Demand estimation of a MRTS station for any metropolitan city is done through a detailed study of travel behaviour characteristics with the present progress of Delhi -MRTS it may operate in the year 2005. The failure of ring railway warns for the accurate demand estimation of this expensive system. In this dissertation demand estimation for Shandara station has been carried out.
For this demand estimation travel behaviour characteristics of
• commuters in the catchment area of Shandara. MRTS station were studied
• using a-detailed questionnaire. Besides regular travel characteristics, a stated preference questionnaire was designed and interviews were conducted at the Bus terminal, intersections and ring railway station. A total number 306 valid samples were collected in this study. Commuters were segmented on the basis of their present mode use. The four commuters segments adopted in this study are (i) Bus commuters (ii)2-w (Two wheeler) commuters (iii) 3-w (Three wheeler/car) commuters (iv) Rail (Delhi Ring Railway) commuters.
The stated preference (SP) data has . been utilised to develop binary choice models for all the above for commuter segments separately. BLOGIT software has been used to calibrate the models . All the models were developed with alternative specific coefficient and three independent variables

i.e. In- Vehicle -Travel Time (IVTT), Out- of —Vehicle- Travel Time (OVTT) and Travel Cost (COST).
Drip distribution matrix for Shandara Station catchment was obtained from a DMRC study. Switching behaviour obtained form SP survey and using

trip distribution matrix for Shandara. Demand for Shandara MRTS stations comes out to be 16,760 which is very low in comparison to RITES estimation of 60,144. In this.RITES study no mode choice. models have .been,.developed and for all the trips a 75% switchover to MRTS has •been -_ ssumed.,, !-Even though the study was conducted on a small sample size the results indicate coherence and can be directly used for estimating switching to MRTS.
