dc.description.abstract Pedal cycles that constitute more than 50 percent of vehicles on roads of urban areas of India contribute to about 25 to 27 percent of fatal road accidents due to their slow speed and instability in a mixed traffic condition with fast moving vehicles. To reduce the possibility of accidents, for the safety of cyclists and to obtain the best possible level of service of the roads, segregation of cycle traffic is a necessity both in straight reaches and at intersectionS In this thesis, methods of achieving this objective has been discussed in general. A case study of an intersection in particular is also included. Study of traffic projec-tion for a future date , trip distribution and trip assignment have also been included suggesting the provi-sion of cycle tracks based on the assigned traffic en_US
