dc.description.abstract Concrete Gravity Dam is a solid concrete structure. with its cross-section. approximately triangular in shape, so proportioned that the external .forces exerted on it are resisted by its own weight. The pattern of stress distribution and deformations in the dam foundation system are of great concern for safety and economy case of a high gravity dam founded ' on stratified weak rock. Any variation in foundation properties would largely affect the safe design of dam. In this dissertation, the .stresses and deformations have been studied by using. 2-D Finite Element Method. The study is divided into 3 parts Part 1 — Analysis of a dam section with varying rock modulus. of foundation, Poisson's ratio of foundation and "foundation extents, considering external loads of water pressure and full_ uplift pressure. Part 2 — Analysis of a dam section with external : loads of water pressure and. modified uplift pressure. Part 3 - Analysis of the dam section for stresses and deformations with a shear zone at different locations in the foundation with loads and foundation extent as in part-2: Result of this . study which deal with distribution of stresses and, deformations have-been analyzed and discussed in this dissertation.... en_US
