Abstract:
The effect of microstructure on corrosion behaviour of steel has been investigated in different aqueous environments and the rate of corrosion reported. The
results show that in the annealed and normalized conditions microstructure is essentially pearlitic. However, on forced air cooling a martensitic microstructure is attained.Corrosion rate was found to be maximum in annealed condition whereas least corrosion rate was reported in the forced air cooled;,, condition. Corrosion damage in NaCI confirmed pitting and that in H2SO4 involved roughening. The results obtained have been analysed on the basis of changes in the hardness and microstructure.
