Abstract:
The study region is located at Darlipali village in Lephripara Taluk of Sundargarh district, Odisha. The site is located within Latitude 21°52'57" N to 22°03'32" N and Longitude 83°49'29" E to 83°57'31" E and is well connected to Sundargarh by road. The field study was done in the month of November 2015. In the present study, groundwater and surface water samples were collected for isotopic characterization in the 10 km zone of Darlipali STPP. To identify the isotopic signatures of groundwater, samples were collected from open wells, tube wells, and hand pumps and surface water samples were collected from ponds and river. On-site measurements like sample temperature, pH, conductivity along with all other relevant site information were also recorded.
The samples were collected at the National Hydrology Institute Roorkee and analyzed for isotopic composition. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope measurements were performed using a double inlet mass spectrometer (GV Instruments, United Kingdom) with automatic sample preparation devices.
The enrichment in δ18O and δD values was observed in river water clearly indicates that the surface water is subjected to more evaporation enrichment. In some regions, evaporation is very high and the light isotope evaporates and enriches the water mass with heavier isotopes. From the results, we can conclude that the groundwater in the region is recharged with rainwater during the post-monsoon season.
