Abstract:
In this study Friction stir welding of low carbon steel is done with and without using
induction preheating. It was revealed that due to localised heating the soundness of the weld
joint is improved. Microstructural characterization and mechanical properties of the welded
joint with preheating were evaluated and compared with the properties of the weld joint
without preheating. It was revealed that due to preheating the average grain size increased. In
addition formation of martensite can also be prevented. The details of hardness and tensile
strength were reported. It was also revealed that with the use of preheating, the number of
welds produced before each tool regrinding is more as compared to without preheating.
