Abstract:
Tall buildings are the representatives of the modern cities and they are the only options for the
future because of the lack of space for spanning a building horizontally. The only way for
accommodating the ever increasing population in the limited area is to span our buildings
vertically. With the construction of tall buildings, the design criteria should be such that it can
take up the loads acting on it. Wind load is the most important factor that needs to be considered.
And moreover wind can even take a shape of disaster. Large wind pressure fluctuations can
occur on the surface of a building. Due to which the structural system is imposed with large
aerodynamic loads and intense localized fluctuating forces act on the facade of such structures.
Hence the facades become one of the most sensitive areas to be looked into while analyzing the
loads acting on different parts of the building and designing the building as a whole. This paper
brings out the effect of wind on high-rise buildings with respect to varying aspect ratio. The
analysis is conducted using the concepts of CFD in the software package GAMBIT-FLUENT.
The average of the drag coefficient, rms value of the lift coefficient, Strouhal number and the
mean base pressure coefficient on the back side of the cylinder have been evaluated and plotted.
