Abstract:
The purpose of a Shake map is to provide rapid estimate of strong ground shaking which
provides emergency response organizations useful information in case of a damaging
earthquake. This report investigates the existing hybrid procedures for computation of Shake
map in near real time and also how local site conditions affect the ground motion prediction
analysis. Further, a strategy to generate Shake maps for Uttarakhand Himalayan region for a
moderate size to large magnitude earthquake recorded at one or more stations within
Uttarakhand Himalayan region is outlined. To validate the method, 29th March, 1999 Chamoli
earthquake and 20th October, 1991 Uttarkashi earthquake in this region has been chosen and
the corresponding shaking map has been generated. This shaking map has been compared
with a recorded peak ground acceleration of the same event and the has been found to be
acceptable. Lastly, some scenario shaking maps have been generated to better understand the
seismic risk to Uttarakhand Himalayan region from nearby tectonics features.
