dc.description.abstract Tourism is now considered as an industry of worldwide significance. Especially tourism related activities help many third world countries for their survival, their stability and growth of the economy. Tourism acts as the second largest foreign exchange earner after oil and petroleum. Tourism is a diverse human activity, an industry and is an experience and its gaze is focused on the 'extra ordinary' the extraordinary is usually packaged as sun, snow, water, resorts, historic areas, towns, cities and so on, which differ in terms of architecture, culture, climate, environment/ setting etc from the tourist's familiar home environments. Among these, old cities are always a matter of interest for the visitors. Rich architectural and cultural diversity, coupled with the wealth of natural elements, make these cities world's interesting tourist destinations. This redefined role of an old city brings in gradual changes in the morphology of the city and its relation to the natural environment. On one hand it can bring in severe load on the existing infrastructure and networking and serious threats to the natural and physical environment. In other words tourism as a new layer in old cities can bring in positive and negative changes. en_US
