dc.description.abstract Active and reactive power demands are never steady and they continually change with the demand. Water input to hydro-generators must, therefore, be continuously regulated to match the active power demand, failing which the machine speed will vary with consequent change in frequency, which may be highly undesirable. A PID (proportional, integral and derivative) controller has been developed in VHDL to control the speed of the hydroelectric turbine. The. Matlab/Simulink environment is used for modeling, simulation and evaluation of the performance of the hydro-electric unit. Modelsim is used to run the VHDL programming for the PID controller. "Link for ModelSim'r is used to interface the two simulators to achieve the objective. en_US
