dc.description.abstract Co-Cr thin film finds extensive application in perpendicular magnetic recording media, prosthetic devices, and high temperature corrosion protection. Owing to the ever growing demand on performance of the thin films in various device applications, a focus has been shifted towards exploring the novel properties of nanocrystalline Co-Cr thin film to realize its superior magnetic property, oxidation and wear resistance through nanoscale size effect. Although the oxidation behavior of microcrystalline Co-Cr thin films is well established, the literature is scarce on nanocrystalline Co-Cr thin films. Therefore, the present work has been focused to study the oxidation behavior of sputter deposited nanocrystalline Co-Cr thin films on steel substrate at high temperature 900°C. The Co-Cr thin film with thickness ranging from 0.1 to Igm was deposited on the steel substrates by DC Magnetron Sputtering. The identification of different phases and microstructures of Co-Cr thin films were carried out by XRD and FE-SEM, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis was used to establish the oxidation kinetics of nanocrystalline Co-Cr thin films through weight-loss measurements and comparison has been made with that of its microcrystalline films. 111 en_US
