dc.description.abstract Energy is one of the basic ingradients of human welfare and socio-economic progress. Energy plays a dominant role in the process of development. A developing Country like India requires higher per capita energy for improving the quality of life through development. The conditions in India are very different than others in view of the fact that nearly 75 to 80 percent of population lives in about 5.5 lakh villages and in majority of these villages (about 4.6 lakhs) the population is below 1000. The problem of energy therefore is very important. For a variety of reasons it is being argued, now, that there should be greater emphasis on the 'softer'energy technologies such as wind, solar and bio-mass rather than sharder'energies like coal, petroleum and nuclear power. There is a general agreement all over the world that eventually a transition will have to be made from oil, gas, coal and uranium to what are called 'Alternative Sources of Energy' such as wind, solar, biomass etc........ en_US
