dc.description.abstractThe distributed physically based Variable Parameter Muskingum Discharge (VPMD) method which is derived directly from the Saint-Venant equations is extended for modeling approximately the two-dimensional overland flow process in one-dimensional form. The two-dimensional solution procedure is developed by considering a two-dimensional overland flow plane to a conceptual one-dimensional plane and, thereby, applying the one-dimensional solution procedure of the VPMD method to simulate the resultant overland flow hydrograph of the actual two-dimensional plane. The conceptualization of the actual flow plane is achieved by considering the flow to move along the resultant direction of both horizontal slopes and considering the overland flow to be one-dimensional along that direction. The performance evaluation of the methodology is carried out extensively by comparing the simulation results with benchmark solutions obtained using standard two-dimensional modeling techniques, and observed discharges under various field conditions. In order to account for the infiltration component under field conditions, the VPMD method is coupled with Horton's infiltration model. The results of this analysis show that this Approximate 2- dimensional-VPMD (A2D-VPMD) method to model the process of overland flow generations over the hillslopes having slopes in both the horizontal directions is found to simulate the overland flow generation process very well under different conditions over the hypothetical planes as well as under field conditionsen_US
