The past few decades have witnessed rapid development in the use of alternative energy resources (small hydro, wind, solar etc.) for electrical power generation, which plays a key role in rural electrification. These also provide electricity facilities through in those un-electrified remote villages, where grid connectivity is either not feasible or not cost effective. Among renewable energy sources, the Small Hydropower Projects (SHPs) are advantageous owing to short gestation period, inexpensive operation & maintenance and most importantly environment friendly. The Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) has certain advantages over conventional generators namely, synchronous generator (alternator) or induction generator. As compared to the induction and synchronous generator in a PMSG, no electrical energy is absorbed by the field excitation system and thus there are no excitation losses, which mean substantial increase in the efficiency; no brushes are needed in this case, thus their frequent replacement is avoided. DOL PMSGs are emerging as interesting alternative in wind and small hydro power generation. This dissertation work focuses on performance analysis of permanent magnet synchronous generator for SHP .For this purpose, mathematical modelling of different components of the considered system has been performed and the complete system has been simulated in Simulink/MATLAB. A number of operating conditions has been analysed to judge the suitability of PMSG for SHP application.en_US
