Abstract: A critical analysis of Chindwin river flows (Myanmar) was taken up. The lean flow analysis was carried out by developing relationships i.e. gauge to gauge relationships, for the four river reaches namely Hkamti-Homalin, Homalin-Mawlaik, Mawlaik-Kalewa and Kalewa-Monywa. For this purpose manning's equation has been applied. The critical flow ranges for all the reaches were identified. The concept of the travel time is used and for each reach relationship is proposed. The predicted discharge at the downstream G-D site matched well with the observed data. Flood flow analysis through the statistical approaches using the annual maximum flows at the five G-D sites was carried by employing different distributions (Normal, Log-normal, Pearson Type III, Log Pearson Type III and Gumbel distribution). To start with statistical tests for the randomness and the trend were carried out. Flood flows corresponding to different return periods (5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 500) were worked out for the five G-D sites along the Chindwin river. Suitable recommendations about the adoption of a particular frequency approach have been made.
