dc.description.abstractConstruction of Dam or any other structure on the river bed alters the profile of the water level upstream of the structure generally known as back water profile. Computations of back water profiles generated due to construction of dams and weirs are important from the following point of view: - Determination of effect of hydraulic structure on the channels - Inundation of land due to a dam or weir construction - Flood plain management and . related Rehabilitation & Resettlement issues - Inter-state disputes arising due to the above problems As such the determination of back water profile for large structures like major dams is very important for the planning and operation of these structures. The two most commonly used hydrodynamic models for computing back water profiles are the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) and the Mike-11 of the Danish Institute of Hydraulics. Mike-11 solves the equations of conservation of mass and momentum based on six point finite difference implicit scheme, whereas in HEC-RAS surface profiles are computed from one cross section to the next by solving the energy equation with an iterative procedure called the standard step method.en_US
