Abstract: Electricity is the vital engine for growth, development and prosperity for the country. The per capita consumption of electricity is the symbol of status of living hood. In developing country like India where about 70 % of population living in villages, the per capita consumption is very less as compared to developed country like .USA. In India there are 106385 villages which are still un-electrified on dated 31-03-2008. Thus the quest to rapidly and firmly put the Indian economy on the course of economic development is technically, a function of adequate supply and distribution of electricity. As Ministry of Power set the goal of providing "Power for all by 2012", there is good requirement to optimally develop the means for effective utilization of available local resources in rural areas for electrification. In hilly region of India where hydropower potential is available but is not being completely utilized for power generation till date due to unavailability of grid, .i.e. the hydro potential is utilized only to fulfill the need local villages. As rural areas are not utilizing the whole potential available, the most of the potential is treated as waste therefore there is a need to have a solution to this major problem. On the same pace of advancement of research present work dealt with the designing of mini-grid, to which small power plants can be connected to utilize the hydro potential available in rural areas. For the purpose of designing of mini-grid, `Bageshwar district" is chosen. Bageshwar district consists of 9 SHP stations, presently running in isolated mode to fulfill the local people demand. Five alternate routing of transmission lines of mini-grid are prepared with the help of GIS and selected for optimized design of mini-grid for the region. Different analysis based on reliability, load flow and cost consideration has been done iii with `Transmission and Distribution Reliability Evaluation Program (TDREP)' and Power System Analysis Toolbox (P SAT) in MATLAB. For optimization Break-even Point (BEP) method is used.
