Abstract: Use of energy is one of the basic indicators of the development. Conventional energy resources are limited and getting expensive day by day. To fulfill the fast growing energy demand, new and renewable energy resources are to be developed for generating energy. Small hydro power is a proven and reliable renewable energy source being used for generating electricity. India blessed with hydropower developed resources only 22% of its potential tapped so far. Small Hydro power in India is estimated as 15,000 MW where only about 2200 MW have being developed, for the remaining untapped Small Hydro power resource public-private participation is encouraged. To facilitate such development All India database of SHP plants is required. Alternate Hydro Energy Centre, IIT Roorkee provides professional supporter in the field of Small Hydro Power Development. Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India has given a mandate to AHEC to develop and maintain Small Hydro Plants database. The present work is one of the steps in the direction of making user friendly and widely available database. Internet is a low cost, widely used technology for easy access of information through out the world. Accordingly Internet based Small Hydro Database is developed. SHP Database website is developed using latest ASP.NET technology of Microsoft and database is created in Microsoft SQL server 2005. Java script and VB.NET languages are used at the back end for functionality of website. Login based approach is made for the users who want to enter SHP station detail and want to upload pictures and drawing of the projects. Google Map API is used for geographical information system (GIS) on the web pages of SHP Database website to provide the geographical location of plants with satellite Imageries. Different type of queries can be done on database using structural query language (SQL) making the website more interactive. State wise listing of All India SHP stations can be done to see number of project operating in the state. Details of each SHP station can also be easily browsed on the website.
