Abstract: Selection of a suitable multiple access control ( MAC ) protocol is a key issue in the design of third generation cellular systems. A well designed multiple access protocol should be able to maximize system_ capacity while maintaining the quality of service requirements of different classes of traffic. A Frame based PRMA protocol with horizontal reservation (FPRMA — HR) for video, voice and data traffic is proposed and investigated in this dissertation. Horizontal reservation corresponds to allocating multiple slots to a voice terminal in a channel. frame. The performance. of this protocol when integrating voice, video and data packet traffic is simulated in a high capacity pico-cellular enviornment. In normal frame based PRMA, a voice terminal is allocated only one slot per frame. Depending upon the number of video users, the number of request slots varies. The MPEG video model is used. In order to accommodate such a bursty traffic, video terminals are allocated slots at the beginning of each channel frame depending on their requirements. Maximum voice capacity,. mean voice access, delays, average data message delay and voice packet dropping probability are evaluated for different voice, video and data load conditions. In comparison with the normal frame based protocol, this protocol can handle more voice capacity within acceptable limits
