Differentiated Services (DiffServ). describe -a set of end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. DiffSery mechanisms enable user to receive different level of services from a provider to support various type of applications. The key mechanism, that enables differentiation in a connectionless network, is the packet classification function that parses the header of the packets, determines their context, and classifies them based on administrative policies or real-time reservation decisions. Packet classification, however, is a complex operation that can become the bottleneck in routers. Network processors are emerging as a programmable alternative to the traditional ASIC based solutions in scaling up the data plane processing of network services. In this dissertation work DiffSery edge router and DiffSery core router have been implemented on SDK 2.01 for IXP 1200 network processor. Multidimensional range matching algorithm and Linear search algorithm are used for packet classification, Deficit round robin algorithm is used for scheduling. Performance of these algorithms has been evaluated on DiffSery edge router. It was found that DiffSery edge router fulfils the requirement of the QoS. The performance of DiffSery core router has been compared with IPv4 router. It was found that performance of DiffSery core router remains unaffected by implementation of this QoS scheme.en_US
