Abstract: In this thesis various approaches for detection of a single tone are investigated for the case when frequencies are known a priori. Methods from signal estimation can be used for this purpose with some modification. These methods are based on Discrete Fourier Transform, correlation and linear regression. However, these approaches are found to be inefficient in terms of complexity as well as performance. Also they are not able to handle jitter in input frequency. Some approaches based on sampling rate alteration, orthogonality and wavelet-transform are proposed. In sampling rate alteration approach no multiplication is involved, thus turns out to be very effective in terms of complexity. In wavelet transform approach, the wavelet-transform can be calculated by orthonormal wavelet, which makes the approach based on wavelet-transform efficient in terms of complexity. However, these approaches need synchronization with the input frequency. The approach based on orthogonality is useful in this case. This approach is effective in terms of synchronization. This does not need any synchronization. These approaches are effective when number of tones to be detected are not large
