Abstract: Location management is a key issue in Personal Communication Service (PCS) networks. In a typical mobile communication system, to establish a connection path for an incoming call, the location of the mobile terminal should be known to the network. The information about the location of the mobile is obtained through the combination of two processes i.e. location registration by the mobile subscriber and paging by the system. Since mobile communication system have limited bandwidth, unnecessary paging of the entire area increases load on the system and frequent location registration requests not only narrow down the range of searching but also increase load on the system. Therefore we need efficient location management schemes to minimize this cost. In this dissertation work we used simulation to study an efficient location management scheme in which timer based location registration is performed within location area to increase the paging accuracy. On the basis of location registration information and velocity of mobile terminal, user's location probability in every cell is calculated. Then a partition algorithm is applied to divide location area in several paging areas. This division of areas ensures that if mobile terminal is searched in order of paging area with decreasing probability, the cost of paging will be minimum. The simulation results show that there is an optimum registration timer value that depends upon the call arrival rate and speed of mobile terminal. This optimum value can be used for setting registration timer of individual user or one class of user.
