Abstract: Over the years, many TCP protocols have been developed to improve throughput performance. But these protocols have lower throughput performance in satellite networks mainly due to the effects of long propagation delays and high link error rates. TCP-Peach [1], a new congestion control scheme, gives better throughput performance in satellite networks compared to earlier TCP protocols such as TCP-Tahoe, TCP-Reno. In this thesis, we have simulated a satellite IP network and shown that TCP-Peach is better than the other TCP schemes for satellite networks in terms of throughput. It is shown that TCP-Peach provides a fair share of network resources. To obtain better throughput performance in satellite networks, we have proposed a small modification in TCP-Peach. In the modified TCP-Peach, if a timeout occurs when there are non zero duplicate acknowledgements, TCP-Peach enters Rapid Recovery phase instead of Sudden Start phase. This increases the congestion window size, which in turn improves throughput. The software is written in C++, and runs under LINUX environment.
