dc.description.abstractThe World Wide Web (WWW) is rapidly emerging as an important medium for the dissemination of information related to a wide range of topics. Web performance impacts the popularity of a particular web site or service as well as the load on the network. With the rapid growth of WWW, web traffic has become a major source of internet traffics. Therefore, the reduction of document retrieval latency on WWW becomes more and more important. The latency can be reduced in two ways: reduction of network delay and improving a web server's (WWW server) throughput by maintaining cache in a web server's address space. In this study, focus is on the design and implementation of a memory cache scheme. The web cache management policy named the adaptive-level policy that either caches the whole file contents or only a portion of it, according to the file size. The results show that at our experimental workload, the throughput improvement can be achieved up to 24 %. With the increasing popularity of multimedia files on the web, adaptive-level policy outperforms other policies on the web in terms of document retrieval latency.en_US
