Location management in mobile communication systems is concerned with those network functions necessary to allow the users to be reached wherever they are in the. network coverage area. The basic operations for that purpose — paging and location updating — are resource consuming since both involve signaling over the radio link between the mobile stations and base stations. Future cellular mobile communication networks will have to support a large number of subscribers, so a significant amount of radio signaling can be expected. There are two basic schemes for tracking mobile users; broadcasting and forwarding pointers. The broadcasting scheme performs well in high mobility region and there is performance degradation in low mobility region while the reverse is true for the forwarding pointer scheme. So a combined scheme is proposed which is a combination of both these schemes, which reduces location update cost in a wide range. In this dissertation, performance study is carried out for all these schemes and to further reduce the update cost, expanding ring multicast scheme is proposed. Simulation is done in C language under Red Hat Linux version 6.1. M.en_US
