Abstract: The major source of errors in B-ISDN/ATM systems is expected to be buffer overflow during congested conditions, resulting in lost packets. A single lost or error ATM cell will cause retransmission of the entire packet data unit that it belongs to. The performance of the end to end system can be made much less sensitive to cell loss by means of cell loss recovery method based on Forward Error Control (FEC). This dissertation presents a complete analysis of the performance of the ATM networks under FEC error control scheme which investigate the interactive effects of the network parameters on the performance. Since the Performance evaluation of the ATM network under Forward Error Control scheme does not render itself to mathematical analysis because of its strong dependence on traffic distribution which results in cell losses randomly distributed among the coding matrix. For that, this dissertation includes a simulation of ATM network model with and without FEC cell loss recovery method, whose results also show that, there is a substantial reduction in cell and packet loss rates. On the other hand, the simulation results indicate that, using FEC error control provides a delay due to matrix encoding/decoding storage.
