dc.description.abstract | Personal Communication Systems (PCS) has been a very active research area recently. The objective of PCS is to provide integrated services (e.g. voice and data) to users in the covered area. So there has been tremendous interest in designing access control for wireless multimedia traffic. The need for an access control protocol comes from the complementary quality of service (QoS) requirements that voice and data have. The motivation behind access control is to schedule data packet transmissions in slots when voice activity is low and to curtail data transmissions when the voice load is high. In this dissertation, the focus is on access control in an integrated voice/data packet radio network, which uses code division multiple access (CDMA) techniques. The network may be terrestrial or satellite based packet radio integrated network that supports mobile terminals. This CDMA radio network can also be a subnet of a group of interconnected integrated networks that provide radio interface for some users of a backbone packet switched (or circuit switched) network. Two access control protocols, MDM-S and MDM-R have been reviewed and described in detail in this dissertation. These protocols are based on estimating the residual capacity available for data using an adaptive prediction technique called modified delta modulation (MDM). The protocols have been analyzed and simulated for perfect and imperfect power control. Comparison of performance with no access control shows considerable improvement in terms of outage probability, access delay and goodput. | en_US |
