dc.description.abstractNext generation multimedia wireless information networks are expected to support a wide variety of applications with varying service requirements. Code division multiple access (CDMA) is assumed to be the multiple access technique for the future wireless systems. In the wireless local area networks (WLAN) the resource management plays key role in the performance. Thus the issue of resource management must be addressed within the context of a multiple access. mechanism. To this effect, the researchers have proposed multi-rate DS-CDMA as the multiple access mechanism of choice for next generation 'multimedia wireless LANs. Power control in DS-CDMA systems and more recently, power/rate allocation in multi-rate DS-CDMA based networks is an open and interesting research area, which has attracted much attention. However, with a few exceptions, most researchers have emphasized centralized resource allocation algorithms for cellular systems, where base station keeps track of the requirements of various users and is responsible for the management of network resources. Ad hoc WLANs, on the other hand are generally configured, as peer-to-peer networks with no centralized hub or controller. In that case, the resource has to be conducted in distributed fashion. In this dissertation work, we address the issue of distributed resource management for multi-rate DS-CDMA based multimedia WLANs by 1) implementing a distributed resource negotiation protocol, known as DRNP that builds on the RTS/CTS bandwidth reservation mechanism and provides QOS guarantees through distributed control of resources in DS-CDMA based multimedia WLANs and 2) investigating the performance of various resource allocation schemes within the context of DRNP, in terms of network wide metrics such as overall throughput and blocking rates. The implementation is done in VC++ on WindowsNT environment.en_US
