dc.description.abstractThe adoption of wavelength division multiplexing as the primary means for transporting voice and data across large distances in the near future is a foregone conclusion, since no other. technology can offer such vast bandwidth capacities. The emergence of broadband communications has increased the need for bulk transport of high capacity signals and services. Multi-wavelength amplified re-configurable optical networks offer . such a capability beyond current transport technologies such as SONET and Gigabit Ethernet. At higher bit rates such as 10 Gb/s and above and/or at higher transmitted powers, as is the case with amplified WOM systems, the effect of fiber nonlinearities beconies significant. In this report, we have studied the origin of these nonlinear effects and outlined the constraints on optical communication systems imposed by them. Also, we have discussed some approaches and measures to suppress these nonlinear interactions.en_US
