Issue Date: 1999
Abstract: Multimedia services require some combination of text, image, voice and video storage and communication and have potential applications in many areas such as education, banking, advertising, publishing and medical imaging [I]. With the rapid growth of the internet and the world-wide-web, there has been an increasing interest in exchanging multimedia information across computer networks. Simultaneously video and audio conferencing applications and distance education have resulted in an extra ordinary growth in wide area network technologies. However, multimedia communication have a large demand on network ro oviiCes. For r services such as distance education and digital video libraries, it is also important that some guarantee on the quality of service is maintained. The need for telecommunication networks capable Of providing such diverse and emerging communication services have motivated the standardization of broadband networks. The asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is considered by International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and T~ standards commitees as a promising solution for current and future networking applications...
