Abstract: Asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) technology is widely accepted as a key component of emerging B-ISDN. It is expected that there will be requirement of ATM switches with less than ten ports to a few thousand ports. Therefore, it is desirable to design an ATM switching system architecture which is modular and can be upgraded over this range with ease and efficiency. But as we 'increase number of ports, throughput of the switching network decreases and it is also desirable to have throughput as large as possible. In this dissertation, two switching networks Baseline and Plane interconnected Parallel network (PIPN) are simulated. The throughput of PIPN network is calculated and compared with that of Baseline network for homogeneous as well as heterogeneous traffic. It is shown that, due to presence of multiple paths between input-output port pairs, throughput of PIPN network is more than that of Baseline network. The performance of both the networks are further enhanced by connecting them into tandem. Both the switching networks are modular and can be extended to the range given above.
