dc.description.abstractIn recent years the emergence of optical fibres and its correspondingly high data rates have led to the development of higher speed networks, both LANs and WANs. These developments led to the design of new transport protocols. which are intended to take advantage of the same, A number of these high speed transport protocols have been designed to date. In this dissertation work, one of these high speed protocols, a periodic state exchange protocol (SNG) is considered. The protocol is for reliably transmitting data messages from the sender to the receiver over a high speed network that may reorder, lose, or corrupt messages. The protocol is based on a new principle that calls for periodic -state exchange between sender and the receiver. In contrast, the traditional protocols exchange state information only when significant events (such as packet loss) occurs. This dissertation aims to study the benefits gained by using SNG protocol for high speed networks. This SNG protocol is simulated for performance evaluation and comparison with other periodic/non-periodic state exchange protocols. The advantages of using this protocol over the conventional protocols are presented.en_US
