Now a days, satellites are being used to transport TCP/IP traffic between distant locations, and to offer Internet access. Satellite channel characteristics such as delay inherent in geosynchronous systems and the probability of bit errors found in any wireless systems, including satellite systems may degrade the performance of TCP. These limitations are becoming more important as new satellite systems offer much higher data transmission rates than those available in the past. A full link utilization may be achievable using the TCP performance enhancement that have already been approved or that are currently in the standards process. Of particular interest in the satellite environment are performance enhancements for fast retransmit and recovery, and selective acknowledgements. Also an alternative protocol, satellite transport protocol (STP) has been constructed for the satellite portion of end-to-end path. This dissertation work is aimed at studying these performance enhancements to increase TCP's performance over satellite channels. Also we modified data transfer mechanism of TCP using the features of STP to improve end-to-end TCP performance.en_US
