Voice over Internet Protocol `VoIP' is a revolutionary technology that has the potential to completely rework the world's phone systems. From a world without VoIP just a few years ago, it is now becoming inevitable that VoIP will be deployed in everything from carriers' backbones to our offices and homes. The benefits of implementing VoIP include cost reduction, integrated IP voice and data networks, multi-vendor interoperability etc. Apart from IP telephony, VoIP can be used to develop any application that involves data transformation in the form of voice. The aim of the dissertation work is to demonstrate the benefits of VoIP in an industrial application. For this purpose, development of an application that retrieves information in the form of voice is selected. While retrieving any information from normal HTML web pages one has to click on several links and also in order to do this one always needs a computer or a display based hardware. What if this could be possible using a phone which involves transmission of voice data? In such a scenario the user does not have to enter his requirements into any option field or press any submit button. He simply listens to the various audio options provided and selects any of them through his speech. The present work is to design and implement an application that informs the user the requested stock value of a company registered at BSE, India. And user enters his request by dialing the number using any POTS phone. To do so VoIP signaling protocols such as Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP) are used for maintaining the call session. The application is developed using Sun Microsystem JDK 2.0, JAIN SIP API, JAIN MGCP API, Harmony-6000 Media Server by IP Unity and an IP Unity Application Server.en_US
