At present various types of excitation system, such as, convential DC, high frequency AC, static & brushless are being adopted in India and abroad. U The convential DC exciter was the un-challenged source of generator excitation for nearly fifty years till the rating ofturbo-generators reached around 100 MW. In the last two decades, alternative arrangements have been widely adopted because of limitations of the DC exciters. With increase in generator ratings, it is not longer enough to consider the exciter as earlier. Instead the performance of the whole excitation system including the automatic voltage regulator and the response of the main generator have to be considered. Technoeconomic considerations, grid requirements, reliability and easy maintenance have become prime considerations.en_US
