Advances over the past decade in many aspect of digital image technology - especially devices for image acquisition, data storage and bit-mapped printing and display - have brought about many applications of digital imaging. Images from the space missions, computer vision for sophisticated robots, computer tomography, enhancement of X-ray images are few of the applications of digital image processing. In the area of consumer electronics, digital image processing plays an important role in improving television images and helps in reducing flickering, limited resolution, a ghost image, background noise, and motion crawling due to line interface. Digital image processing will have a major impact on digital televisions, high definition television systems, and video communication for conferencing and telephony purposes [1]. Digital image processing can be classified broadly into four areas, depending upon nature of task. These are image enhancement, restoration, coding and understanding. In image enhancement, images are either processed for human viewers as in television, or are preprocessed to aid machine performance, as in object identification by machine. The effect of degradation of image due to blurring etc., is reduced or eliminated in the image restoration. For applications requiring transmission of visual data in real-time over a band limited channel like visual telephony or video conferencing, image coding techniques are used to represent an image with as few bits as possible, preserving a certain level of image quality and intelligently. In image understanding, contents of an image are represented symbolically which requires signal processing and concepts of artificial intelligence as well....en_US
