The Internet. is widely known for lacking any kind of mechanism for provisioning of Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. The modern Internet applications increasingly involve real-time elements like voice and video. Such sophisticated applications need efficient mechanisms to guarantee their performance. The network. Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms play crucial role since the network environment provides most of the delay, jitter and packet loss in a real-time application. This dissertation provisions the 'Quality of Service (QoS) at the network node level. The `QoS' parameters considered are `queuing delay', `Jitter' and `Packet Loss'. The aim is to support convergent applications and an instance Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based Voice over IP (VoIP) application has been used for the investigation. A Differentiated Services (DiffServ) environment is used under control of Common Open Policy Service (COPS) based management system. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) system uses the Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) to infer the `QoS' requirements to the closest edge router in this network. The simulation has been done in `C' language over `Linux' platform, using Pentium class machines.en_US
