Spurred by the emergence of optical fiber technology and its correspondingly high data rates have led to the development of higher speed networks, both local and long haul. These developments led to the design of fast packet switching Architectures (FPSA). This dissertation addresses one of the major function in Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN) known as Asynchronus Transfer Mode (ATM) switching and multiplexing. The fast packet switching architectures are used to achieve the ATM switching and multiplexing functions of B-ISDN. A unified classification of these FPSA has been proposed. Among the proposed FPSA, Banyan-based networks are most widely used in B-ISDN environment. The design principles of regular delta networks-A sub class of broad class Banyan-networks, are described. Design issues of Batcher-Banyan networks, Multiple Banyan networks with multiple outlets are presented. The performance issues of regular delta networks-(in particular omega, baseline, delta network), without buffering and with internal input buffering are studied and simulation results are compared with the analytical results. A new output (internal) buffering scheme has been proposed and its simulation results are presented. The simulation results of Batcher-Banyan networks, Multiple Banyan switch fabrics (MBSF), are discussed and are compared with the analytical results of simple Banyan networks. The proposed unified classification of ATM-FPSA gives the clear picture of FPSA so far have been proposed.en_US
