Abstract: In present computer networks, dynamic routing is carried out either on the basis of vector-distance routing or shortest-path routing. In India, ERNET (Educational and Research NETwork) follows vector-distance based routing by applying proprietary routing protocol-IGRP (Inter-Gateway Routing Protocol). This protocol is proprietary in nature which limits the choice of routers. At the same time it has slow convergence and doesn't support the feature of subnetting. I. To over come these shortcomings, implementation of a new protocol is required and OSPF (Open Shortest Path First) routing protocol is one of such type. The implementation requires careful planning on changeover strategy, OSPF-areas and router's configuration for OSPF-environment. In this dissertation, an attempt has been made to select for ERNET-the relevant changeover strategy, stable .OSPF area topology and correct router's configuration for OSPF-environment. This dissertation also includes details of the routes for the stable OSPF-area configuration.
