Abstract: Response time and throughput are. the two most important performance criteria of any data communication network. Both the manager" and the designer of a data network are mainly. interested 'in having higher throughput across th-e-network but at the same time, desire to have the network delay-or response time to an acceptable minimum value,so as to keep the network users happy. During the designing and selection process of any data network, the network equipment must be able to cater for the known or projected data traffic with delays that are within limits as defined by' the .users. . In this dissertation work, a software tool named "PSNET"(Packet Switching Network tool) has. been specifically developed which will be of immense use to both, the manager and the. designer of 'a private packet switchig network. A very pr-actical'approach has been used for development of this tool. Queueing Theory concept with certain assumptions has been utilied.to model various components of the packet network. The M/M/1 Queueing system has been used for modelling PADs or, terminal concentrators and transmission links and the M/D/.1 queueing- system for dedicated switching nodes. A predetermined static routing procedure is followed.for routing the data traffi'c.Use of.Graph theory has been made for .finding shortest paths with- least no. 'of hops between each pair . of backbone switching nodes to, route the data packets. The software has been implemented in Turbo Pascal Version 5.5. The tool has a very efficient and user freindly graphics interface. The user is given control of the cursor. on Y (iv) the screen for drawing the pictorial representation of . the network. Provision to accomdate changes in any, of the network. parameters and data traffic at any time during programme execution is available to the' user of the tool. The . changes.' that are effected in the network parameters are simultaneously displayed on the video screen. The major changes that can be made during the run.. time are addition of extra nodes,deletion/modification/restoration of existing switching nodes, modification.in various links connecting network components, modification in data-traffic./host parameters, addition/deletion of PADs or terminal concentrators ,.and addition/deletion of terminals. These alterations., are ext.reamely useful in the decision making during_ management & design processes. Last but not „the least, yet another important feature of this tool is the graphic. display of the results. The -delays that occur at various network segments while- data packet flows between, a particular user host pair are shown in.a 3-D bar graph facilitating easy comparison. For different cases,,. of alterations in the network parameters and data traffic, the end-to-end network transit times are also plotted_in a 3-D bar graph. This makes the analysis of the results quite simpler and highly interesting. -Performance analysis and network optimization can be carried out' by making use of this package. The network manager can analyse the network Under normal load condi, tions, worst cases or even when alterations are. made. This analysis assists the manager or the designer in 'decision making even prior to. actually making changes on the physical network
