dc.description.abstract | Multimedia traffic being a heterogeneous combination of different classes of information streams expects from a network a very high speed and broadband transmission facilities and excellent information handling capacity for better quality of service and performance requirements. The disparity in quality of service, delay and latency requirements of dlillercni classes uI tratlic cxisling in the network siinultancu isly, demands for a stringent congestion control mechanism for traffic control. This report discusses a comparative study of congestion control strategies for traditional networks and multimedia networks, some special features which are required to be incorporated in a congestion control scheme with regard to multimedia applications, followed by a congestion control method for multimedia traffic and its performance analysis. The proposed scheme is an improvement in the Framing strategy and has been implemented by using dynamic buffer allocation in the service discipline at the switching nodes. The control mechanism comes into play while a packet enters into the network and maintains nearly the same smoothness as the packets travel through the network. A comparison based on the performance measures like buffer requirements, delay and loss characteristics has been made between the two strategies i.e. the original Time Framing and the proposed scheme. In the end, the scope of Future work and the work in progress has teen given that will embody the principles discussed towards more complete solutions. | en_US |
