Abstract: In recent years the emergence of optical fiber and its correspondingly high data rates have led to the development of much higher speed networks, both local and long haul. These developments led to the design of new transport protocols called "high speed transport protocols". This dissertation address one of the major functions of transport protocol the error control. Performance of different error control schemes are compared both by analysis and simulation. Different error control schemes compared are Go-back-N, one-at-a-time selective retransmission and the method used in a recently proposed high speed transport protocol called SNR protocol. A new error control technique in proposed in this dissertation by modifying SNR protocol. Based on the combined result of the analysis and simulation the proposed technique is proved to be better than other three techniques.By using this technique we can achieve optimum throughput if the window size is slightly more than the delay-bandwidth product.
