Abstract: 1. The civil telecommunication network world over is switching to Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) in a gradual but steady manner due to the demand of various services offered to end user and the cost benefits in the long run. The need of an ISDN for defence forces deployed in a tactical role was felt by the defence planners world over, after the AREA GRID COMMUNICATION system failed in satisfying many service requirements and in avoiding the traditional hierarchical communication completely. 2. As the role and employment of the TACTICAL ISDN is quite different from the civil network, a thorough study of requirements of tactical communications and identification of limitations of AREA GRID COMMUNICATION system is a.must before evolving a model for tactical communication. The tactical environment demands a very rugged, efficient, survivable and secure network that caters for different types of failures. As the cost involved is also tremendous, the evolution has to be done in a phased manner. This dissertation evolves certain TACTICAL ISDN models and discusses various issues involved. An elaborate study of possible routing schemes and procedures has been done. 3. Any new idea needs to be proven using a simulation model so for the TACTICAL ISDN a detailed simulation model has been suggested and a smaller version of this model has been implemented. This simulation model with the inclusion of complete User Parts, as recommended by CCITT for ISDN some modifi N cations to support tactical requirements), can be used for testing the software of the actual system. In fact, similar simulation model can be used for simulation other networks. n This simulation model will also be helpful in performance analysis of the network, signalli and routing ~ • •- schemes. Software testfng tools for testing a software, needing concurrent execution of several has also processes been suggested and implemented. 4. As__the_wark,invoived was enormous, every thing could not be implemented however an effort has been made to Identify problems associated with the Implementation of most of the issues and to suggest solutions for the same, C
