Conventional process control methods have hitherto hinged around the development of a suitable mathematical model of the process being controlled. But in real world systems, inherent non-linearities and complex input - output relationships make the modelling of the process a difficult task. Moreover, with the system parameters time varying in nature, the validity of these. mathematical models itself becomes questionable. The approach adopted in this dissertation, viz, the fuzzy logic based approach to process control, is an attempt to incorporate' human intelligence in the design of controllers, with a view to shift the focus of control system design from being 7 quantitative to being qualitative in nature. The case studies undertaken in this dissertation for the modelling and simulation. of fuzzy logic controllers in both, industrial and biological environments bring forth the.merits of this novel approach. The control is linguistic, robust, inherently parallel and hence versatileen_US
