Abstract: The digital representation of images requires a large number of bits. The aim of image compression is to reduce this number as much as possible in such a. way that from the reduced representation the original image may be, reproduced within acceptable limits of distortion. The main concepts and technique for the transmission and storage of various types of images have been studied and compared in this dissertation. The aim has been to focus on the main techniques being used over the decade of eighties and early ninties. The techniques have been described and the various modifications and improvements they have undergone by now have been discussed. A performance evaluation and comparision of the major schemes has also been presented
