Abstract: Among other developments in the field of communications, computer networking has carved a niche of its'own. The boom in computer networking technology in the bargain, has engendered large, complex and heterogeneous networks composed of numerous disparate elements supporting a medley of devices, protocols and architectures. Inadvertent side-effects have been the increasing difficulties associated with maintenance •and diagnosis of the network, optimal usage of resources in,. large communication domains, operational costs involved and the quality of services provided to the users, to name a few. All these factors have led to the advent of network management to provide effective tools to, create, manage and operate networks. In the context of campus-wide networks, network administrators need management tools that'' allow them to monitor and control their internal campus networks along with their links to the external world. In the light of the emphasis on network management.,- this dissertation attempts to provide management tools for the HP9000 LAN. An integrated management tool for HP9000 LAN has been successfully implemented, which provides a framework in which a network manager can carry out management tasks in a user-friendly environment. Using this tool a manager can initiate simple control actions and transfer of management information. A menu-driven front-end has been implemented to provide the manager a friendly interface. A simple user—initiated event reporting mechanism has also been supported. The software for the implementation of this tool, for most of the part has been written in C language, and has used various utilities available in HP—UX environment. (
