Recently Object oriented approach to programming and designing database systems has received tremendous attention. Object Oriented Database Management System (OODBMS) is the confluence of ideas from object oriented language and database. OODBMS meets the requirements of new generation application areas like computer aided design or manufacturing (CAD/CAM), artificial intelligence (Al) and expert system. Conventional database systems were mainly designed for business and financial applications. Their success was due to the simple concept and strong mathematical concept. However they lack rich data abstraction capability and also lack to support data that are rich in semantics. These types of data are used in CAD/CAM and AI application areas. However these drawbacks can be overcome by Object Oriented Concepts, Embedding the Object Orientation concept to the database management system gives rise to Object Oriented Database Management System. OODBMS is in its infancy stage. It has lot of potentials, but number of issues regarding its implementation are to be solved. Some issues are:(1) Whether to extend an Object Oriented Programming Language or to extend a relational system, (2) What kind of storage mechanism will be adopted for storing simple and complex object, (3) What will be concurrency control schemes? etc. In this dissertation there has been an attempt to implement an Object Oriented Database Management System using C++ language under Unix environment. A mechanism to store complex objects also is been tried.en_US
