Computer network is an area that focuses on the study of communication structure-interface, connecting media, access and routing algorithms, flow and error control and related topics. The question of performance is of concern in the design of a local area network for a specific application. The performance of local-area network (LANS) is a multifaceted problem because of the complex interaction among a potentially large number of system components. A basic category of LAN performance questions is related to the properties of the medium access protocol, i.e. its throughput-delay characteristics. Investigation of the access protocol can provide variable insight into the overall efficiency of the mechanism, its sensitivity to essential parameters (like transmission rate, etc.) and other important properties. This thesis outlines simple techniques to evaluate performance of ring and bus LANS using simulation. The simulation program was written in 'C' language. Network studied includes token ring, slotted ring and random access bus (CSMA/ CD) network. The evaluation is based on simulation model.en_US
