Abstract: With the widespread use of computers in the country there is an inherent need for protection of data to unauthorized or otherwise malicious users. Also with increasing use of networks there is also a greater need to restrict access. Today, personal computers form a large installed base. They are being networked in large numbers and also they are being used by institutions for multiusers and therefore are posing a serious security threat (ideal ground for stealing corporate secrets and/or destroying competition)to these unaware users. The idea of this thesis work is to develop a method to restrict the unauthorized access to data and programs on the personal computers, as far as possible. In the implemented protection scheme the directories have been divided into three categories viz. System, Universal and User directories. There will be two types of users, namely Superuser (like a system manager) and User (normal users). Each user is provided a separate directory with a password. User is allowed to work in his own directory or in a universal directory. User is prevented to do some operations on files in universal directory. Superuser creates or deletes users and can have access to all files in the system.
